What did you like about the course?
I loved my time at Sheffield Hallam University. Sheffield is a really vibrant and interesting city and I made a lot of good friends during my time there. Being a big sports fan, I was really attracted to the course and it more than lived up to my expectations. I liked the variety of subjects and modules on offer, and really enjoyed engaging in discussions; always learning and taking something away from lectures each week.
I found it really interesting to critically examine some of the wider social issues that play out in sport, such as, the role of mass media, deviance, inequality and fandom. I also enjoyed studying theorists such as Marx, Freud and Foucault, and looking at how their theories applied to the world of sport.
How did the course help you in your chosen profession?
Since graduating, the breadth of the course has allowed me to work in a variety of industries including sports statistics, teaching and broadcast media. For the last few years, I have moved to Sydney and into the digital advertising industry devising and developing marketing content strategies for a number of major global organisations, including sports brands and broadcasters. The course not only helped to hone my communication and writing skills but also provided me with the platform to think critically, articulate opinions and solve problems, something that is invaluable in the world of advertising.
