Abstract

This presentation considers how porn consumption can be understood in relation to research on sex, leisure and play. I examine how both sex and pornography have been positioned in relation to notions of casual, serious, deviant and dark leisure, and linked to a range of ‘extreme’ practices and pursuits. I ask how useful the frameworks of leisure and media studies are for understanding sex and pornography and how ideas of play might be developed to further this understanding. Drawing on a broad set of studies of sexual practices such as BDSM, dogging and chemsex, as well as my own work on porn audiences, I consider what this kind of research suggests for developing the study of sex, pornography and play.
